Mountains

In science we have been talking about mountains and how they form. For Mrs. Cobias class we had to make a graph to represent the tallest mountains on each continents. And I hade a little puzzle of the world and each continent was a piece and on every piece their was a label of the tallest mountain. This first started my fascination about mountains. There are so many mountains and it is hard to determine the height of all of them. Mountains form in so many ways and all of them are fascinating. Just the statement that a mountain is so massive and how it can not be moved.

All of the tallest mountains on each continent together is called the seven peaks, and yes there is one for antarctica because it is still a continent. Now not all them are determine because it is hard to find the actual continental boundaries and it is hard when two continents are joined by land. Boundaries are usually determined by things like what kind of rocks are in the region. This is true for Europe and Asia because Mt. Elbrus which is in Russia and depending on the boarder it is either in Europe or Asia. If it is in Asia than Mount Blanc is the tallest mountain in Europe. If it is in Europe than it would be the tallest mountain in Europe.

With satellite technology and GPS we have been more accurate in calculating the height of mountains, although there is still a margin of error of about 5 meters. As you all Know mount Everest is the tallest mountain, but you probably do not know what the second tallest mountain is. If you are wondering and can not figure it out it is called K2. K2 is another mountain in the Himalayas but it is in a different region of the Himalayas than mount Everest. Mt Everest is near Nepal and the is by the western part of where the India plate is sliding into the Asian plate. K2 is located near Pakistan and where the north part of the Indian plate is sliding into the Asian plate.

Some people climb Mountains like Mt Everest and K2 for a hobby. K2 is shorter but it is difficult to climb because there is only one side you can climb. Mt Everest is taller but has a couple of more routes you can take. When climbing the mountains the higher you get the less oxygen there is in the air, so you are encouraged to take bottled oxygen when you climb. Some people who like to go down in history actually climb to the top with out bottled oxygen which is a pretty good accomplishment if you do it and do not die. There are also a lot of sicknesses you can get on the mountain that can kill you fast. Like one where your body is not use to the quick change in oxygen level, elevation, and temperature and your brain swells and you get a massive head ache and if you do get it you are basically dead. Their has only been one person to survive it. I would not be brave enough to ever climb a mountain like that.

My week end

This week end I went to Provo. My mom had a conference so I was able to go and stay in the hotel. For the most of the conference I slept in. Then when my mom came home we went to the brick oven to eat lunch. And we went shopping at the university mall, which is huge. After that we went swimming at the hotel pool. Then after that we went back to the room. On Sunday morning we woke up, packed, checked out, and left. The ride home was very long and boring. When we got home we unpacked and then we hade to go have dinner at my grandparents house and we stayed there most of the night.

I am going to tell you about some of the thing in a little more detail. On Saturday we decided to eat lunch at the brick oven. The brick oven is an Italian restaurant that mainly serves pizza but they still have some pasta you can order. Me and my dad split a small pepperoni pizza. It was very delicious and tasted so much better than all of the other pizza places I have ever ate at.. They also have home made root beer. It was so good and you get free refills unlike most places where you have to pay more for another.

After we were done eating we went to the university mall, it was huge. We looked around in a couple of stores. Then we went into the At&t store because we were at the end of our contract and we could get new phones. So we decided to get new phones. It took us a while. My dad does construction and he pick a nokia flip phone. He also bought a Blue tooth head set that he could use at work. My mom got a samsung phone that slides up to reveal the key pad. Me and my brother pick the same phone. It is like my moms but it also has a key board that slides out to the side. They are so cool because they are like a smart phone because It has an organizer and it also has a camera. I has to wait till we got home to open use mine because I left my phone home and it had my sim card in it.

After we had been given our phones we went back to the hotel room where we started to charge them. While we were waiting we went to the pool to swim. I played a game with my brother where we had to try and dunk the other person in the pool. My brother never dunk me once. But we got tiered of it and we just swam across the pool. When we were done we went back to the room and we started to set up our phones. I had to help most of my family because they are not very good at setting up new things, like I had to help my dad set up his blue tooth head set and tell him how you use it. I was sad when we had to go home.

My own little library

In my room I have a shelf and on the shelf I have all the books I have read, books I am going to read, and books I could possibly read in the future. I have about fifteen books on the shelf. I hope when I am older I read as often as I do now and have a whole wall of books. I hope to get more books as I get older. I will get a lot more books when I have a job. But right now I just have fifteen which is still quite big. If I get any more I will have to make more room on my shelves.

In my library I keep books I like that I have read before. Books like Apollo 13, the seventh Harry Potter book, and the Artemis Fowl series. I read Apollo 13 in seventh grade. I first caught interest in the book when I started to like things about space. It was a lot harder to read because it was a ninth grade level book. It was a good book even though some of the words were hard to pronounce. I would have all the Harry Potter books but they are all my mom’s and when the seventh one came out she bought two. The seventh was one the only one I had to finish when I started to read it. I started to read the Artemis Fowl series because a friend recommended it. I started to read them and they were good but I have not finished the series yet. I also have a book that I read in sixth grade that I had to read and it was biography on all the Presidents. I found it in the book orders and told my mom I wanted to get a copy of it.

I also have books I want to read on my shelf. That would include the Artemis Fowl books I have not read and the hunt for the read October. I want to read hunt for the red October because I thought the movie was great and there is that curiosity of comparing the book with the movie. A series I have not finished, that is not on my shelf, is the series of unfortunate events. I think I am on book seven and I sort of stopped because they started to get a little boring. I thought the first three were very good but the fourth and fifth were bad and the sixth was a little better.

I also have books on my shelf that were gifts or books of significant meaning. I have a book on the civil war which is one of those books where you read a page and then you have a choice and what ever you decide takes you to a page and you can read it over and over again and get a different ending every time. I also have a book called dignity which I got from a speaker who gave them out at honor society. I hope that I can continue to add books to my collection.

Things on my mind

One thing on my mind right now are the presidential candidates running to become their party candidates. Right now their has only been two caucuses Iowa, which is a big one, and Wyoming, which is a small one. The caucus is basically to determine who will become the candidate for their party. Hopefully you still remember that from US history. In order to become the candidate for the party you have to win as many caucuses as you can. Then when they are all over the candidate who won got the most delegates, which is a certain number based on how big the population of the state is and which you get for winning the caucus.

Another thing I have been thinking about is the NFL playoffs. This week end was the wild card games. At the end of the season who ever qualified for the play offs would be ranked. The top two teams get what is called a bye which means they have to play one less game then the other four teams that makes the playoffs. Since the wild card games are over the Patriots have to play the Jaguars, the Colts will play the Chargers, the Seahawks have to play the Packers, and the Cowboys will play the Giants.

This week end I have had to work on one of the biggest assignments. It is for teen living and I have to carry a baby around and it will not get over until tomorrow night. Every day I have to keep a log about where the baby was, who it was with and the care needed by the baby. Every day I have to take time out of my schedule to pretend like I am feeding or changing its diaper. Every day in the log I have to have 5 feedings and 5 diaper changes, I also have to have one daily bath. In addition to that I have to write three separate papers on a common Illness of babies, a letter to my baby, and an essay on what I learned. This assignment is worth 1200 points it is the only big assignment and will give you an automatic F in the class if you do not do it. Like right now I had to stop to change a diaper. Then there is Mrs. Cobia who will not let you in her room with the baby and then we have to carry it down to Ms. Powell’s room.

But another class I like is manufacturing. Right now I am making a baseball bat on the Lathe. You basically shave wood off until it has a specific diameter for that part. Sanding it is what takes the longest. You start with a low grit sand paper, which is a very rough sand paper, and you work your way up to a smooth sand paper and that makes it very smooth. When you finish sanding you apply a finishing, that is what makes it look shinny. Then you cut off the parts of the blank that attached it to the lathe. Then you apply the finishing to the parts that did not get it the first time. You can tell I have a lot of things on my mind.
